A few nights ago we went to Pappa Rich in Castle Hill and I wanted to give a little review.
Malaysia translates to “land of the Malays”. Its location within Southeast Asia has resulted in Malaysian cuisine being a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Thai Filipino and indigenous Bornean and Orang Asli, with light to heavy influences from Arab, Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines amongst others.
Pappa Rich is Malaysian Street ‘hawker’ style food, specialising in ‘Roti’ (flat bread) and chicken curry.
Located in the Castle Hill Plaza Lower level, the interior is beautiful, playing homage to Malaysian kopitiams (coffee shops) as well as colonial English aesthetics.
The menu itself is a self serve scanning system.
Excellent for going out in large groups, it takes the awkwardness out of paying the bill.
Simply scan the QR code to view the menu, then start adding the requested items to your cart. Then checkout and pay.
Each person orders their own item or can order for others is they so desire.
Specialising in Roti, menu items inlcuded hainan bread, dim sum, rice, noodle, vegetarian, and specialty items such as biriyani, nasi lemak, laksa and steamed chicken and rice.
The menu also feautred a wide array of drinks – from crushed amoothies and juices to iced coffees and mocktails/cocktails.
Food was served quickly, and portions were reasonable.
We ordered:
Roti Telur (aka flatbread and egg combination with chicken curry) 9/10 (this was my favourite item)
Crispy egg noodle 9/10
Nasi goreng (fried rice) 8/10
ABC (shaved ice for dessert) 5/10
Pandan Sago (green pearl/tapioca dessert) 4/10
Watermelon smoothie 9/10
All the items were excellent except personally for the dessert which was slightly unusual.
The ABC (Ice Kachang) was shaved ice, ice cream, with toppings of peanuts and red bean. While being visually spectacular, the shaved ice was nice however synthetic/too swee tasting, and the topping were salty and slightly lacklustre.
Similarly the pandan sago was also slightly too sweet and the pandan flavour was overpowering, instead of being blended through.
Overall however would rate the experience a 9/10
The restaurant is affordable, accessible, and menu items are delicious.
Will be back,
With love,
Luna x
