Catching Up Over a Picnic: Tips for the Perfect Outdoor Gathering

Went to Moore Park Sydney for a girls day and catch up.

Biggest thanks to my friend for bringing the food

Here are my tips for having a great time at your next picnic 🙂

Choose easy to carry foods, make food beforehand.

Lunch menu

  • Chips
  • Salami sticks
  • veggie pasta,
  • Ham cheese wraps
  • Orange juice
  • Coke Zero
Duffel bags, tote bags and picnic blankets are great way to carry food and make the picnic more comfortable

Paper utensils from places are a great way disposable option and make life 1000x easier.

Check facilities beforehand

  • Get a map and research  venue beforehand. Knowing the location of facilities reduces the chance of you getting lost in the grounds, unnecessary stress and fatigue.
  • Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated
  • Check if park has water refilling stations, BBQ/play areas for kids, designated picnic areas and sporting sections.
  • Choose well known locations when meeting in groups as these often have accessible/clean bathrooms, easy parking and public transport options.

 Some can include

Chinese Garden Friendship

Botanical Gardens Sydney

Hyde Park

In this case we visited the Centennial Parkland at Moore Park. Moore Park was name in 1867 after Charles Moore, the Mayor of Sydney City Council 1867-1869.

Moore Park is lush, quiet and spacious. Entry is also free and the bathrooms were clean and well maintained.

Centennial Parklands is 15 mins away from Central Station Sydney by bus or 1km walk from the Royal Randwick light rail stop.

Choose a familiar group of friends

  • If you are a person with a mental or physical health condition, picnics can sometimes become too physical demanding to attending or organise. I.e weather is too hot, overstimulating etc.
  • In case of emergencies, choose friends who know about your condition as this will take the awkwardness out of adjusting/changing plans if necessary.

Social preparation

Have a list of conversation topics ready.

If you struggle with social anxiety group settings can sometimes be tricky.

Conversation topics can include

  • Hobbies
  • Favourite films
  • Current work/job/study
  • Favourite foods/restaurants to visit
  • Travel plans and holidays

If possible deflect, and avoid discussing

  • Relationships/children
  • Health concerns
  • Family issues
  • Living situations
  • Politics
  • Finances

Lastly: Have FUN !!

Picnics and girls days are a great catch-up, and it is a blessing to be able to do it with good friends. Enjoy it and take as much out of it as possible.

Hope this post helps for your next picnic :))

With love,
